Founded in 2002 in Eastport Maine, the Tides Institute & Museum of Art is located on the Atlantic coast at the US/Canada border. Cyanotype Workshop with TIMA StudioWorks artist, Harley Ngai Grieco

Tides Institute & Museum of Art 43 Water Street, Eastport, ME

This workshop is a hands-on introduction to the cyanotype photographic printing technique, a process used by artists, botanists, and architects since the mid 19th century. Participants will be using objects to create direct photo-grams on prepared paper. All ages welcome; children must accompanied by an adult. Registration is limited; advance registration is required. Early Beethoven and Georgiana Waltzes Concert

Tides Institute & Museum of Art 43 Water Street, Eastport, ME

We've got a special concert at our North Church building in Eastport this Sunday, August 11 @ 2 pm. Joachim Woitun (cello) and Jane Lanctot (Fortepiano) will perform a concert of early Beethoven music on period instruments. Concert is free, but donations will be gratefully accepted to support the continued restoration of the North Church building with its acclaimed acoustics. The fortepiano to be played at the concert is a reproduction of a Viennese Andreas Stein from 1784. The concert will also include a locally commissioned piece (detail of cover posted here), The Georgiana Waltzes, dating to 1844 and composed and arranged for the fortepiano by William C. Glynn of Boston and dedicated to Miss Maria A. Hobbs of Eastport. An original copy of the piece is in our collections.

Walking Tour of Tides Institute & Museum of Art’s (TIMA) Historic Buildings

Tides Institute & Museum of Art 43 Water Street, Eastport, ME

TIMA throws open the doors of six of its seven historic buildings as part of this walking tour to provide an opportunity to see the building's interiors. Buildings date from the early 19th century (1819 North Church, 1829 Seaman's Church, and c.1820 Veterans Memorial Hall) to the late 19th century (1887 Main Building, 1887 StudioWorks Building and c.1890 Victorian Children's Playhouse). Three of the buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places and one is included in the local historic district. Tour the buildings that make up the Tides Institute and Museum of Art's multifaceted programs, exhibits and shows. Tour maps available at any of the sites.

Opening Reception: Art for All Ages

“From the Collections: Art for All Ages,” will feature works from TIMA’s permanent collection that will appeal to visitors of all ages. Inspired by the educational outreach publications TIMA recently published under the title “ArtLink,” this exhibition will feature works that will appeal to all, with some items that can be touched, some playful options for responses to the exhibition, including hands-on activities, and works of art presented in the gallery in unconventional ways to make viewing more comfortable for younger visitors. This exhibition will open to the public during regular museum hours, 10 am to 4 pm, on Wednesday, June 20, with an opening reception on Friday, June 22, from 5 to 7 pm.

Opening Reception – “From the Collections: Work, Art & Craft,” at Tides Institute & Museum of Art

Tides Institute & Museum of Art 43 Water Street, Eastport, ME

Exhibition draws upon TIMA’s extensive cultural collections relating to the theme of work, art and craft. From blueberry harvesting to lobstering, from Passamaquoddy basketmaking to shipbuilding, this exhibition includes paintings, prints and photographs along with implements and products. Exhibition runs through July 9.

Audubon Talk by Author, Peter Logan

Tides Institute & Museum of Art 43 Water Street, Eastport, ME

Author, Peter Logan, will give a talk and short walking tour, starting at the Tides Institute & Museum of Art’s(TIMA) main building, relating to his recently published book, Audubon: America’s Greatest Naturalist and His Voyage of Discovery to Labrador. The talk and walking tour will highlight Audubon’s two visits to Eastport in the early 1830s where he launched his sailing expedition to Labrador. One of the letters that Audubon wrote while in Eastport in 1833 to his wife, Lucy, in New York City that is in the TIMA’s collections will be on display. So will an original Audubon Havell edition print dating to the late 1830s of the Hyperborean Phalarope (shown in the photo) that is also in TIMA’s collections.

Opening Reception: Exhibition of Recent Acquisitions

The Exhibition of Recent Acquisitions will open on Friday, June 17, with an opening reception from 5-7 pm. The exhibition will remain on display until July 17. The artwork featured in the photo is Dan Graham, “Homes for America, 1”, lithograph, c.1965, from the collections of the Tides Institute & Museum of Art.
