Mark Fulford, well-know teacher on soils and gardens, and a farm consultant, will be teaching a class in the Lecture Hall at WCCC in Calais. Mark is from Monroe, Maine, and travels extensively to learn different ways of growing plants, and to share that knowledge with others. He teaches that improving the health of the soil improves the health of the plants, which improves the health of the people who eat them.

Allow your child the joy of spending February school vacation week snowshoeing and skiing on trails, building winter shelters, indoor rock climbing, geocaching on snow, learning about winter ecology, and more! Cost for the 4-day program is $80 although scholarships are available based on financial need. Military personnel receive a 20% discount. Maximum enrollment is 12 youth and preregistration is required online.

The Sunrise County Food Alliance will hold their 6th annual Soils and Gardens Class on Saturday, April 28, in the gymnasium at Washington County Community College in Calais. Mark Fulford, a well-known farm consultant and educator, will again be teaching topics of interest to farmers, those who plant gardens, and anyone interested in sustainable food production. Mark has long studied agriculture at his own farm in Monroe, Maine, and in locations around the world. He teaches from a background of common sense, science, and cultural wisdom. In this class he will address soil improvement, increasing diversity on small farms, and how to deal with current climate conditions, including preparing for drought and increased insect pressure on crops, as well as other topics. Bring your lunch. No charge; donations will be accepted. For information, call 454-3364.

Building Capacity for Public History in Washington County is the theme of Down East Heritage Day, planned for Saturday, November 2, at the Community College in Calais from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. A fun and informative program is planned to help Washington County museums, archives and historical societies tell the stories of their communities. Displays, demonstrations and workshops will inform the work of local historical organizations, provide guidelines for preserving and sharing their historical treasures in Down East Maine.

Join the Maine Natural History Museum on August 11 for a talk at WCCC as Dr. Steve Crawford of the University of Guelph shares his research into one of Passamaquoddy Bay’s apex predators! This research is part of the White Shark Knowledge System Research Program which is working to better understand these mysterious creatures.

This is a free event and all are welcome! A donation to the Maine Natural History Museum would be greatly appreciated.
