This summer the St Andrews Arts Council is presenting the Second Annual Old Sow Theatre Festival. The Festival includes performances of plays and staged readings - including planned performances of up to 5 of our "The 5 Minute Play in a Week Playwriting Competition" winning scripts. We are accepting scripts for new or unproduced short plays that have a connection to the sea or the Maritime Provinces. Cast limit of 4 people. The 5 winning entries will be performed in St. Andrews in July. Each winning playwright will receive $100.

In honour of artist Jay Dampf, a long-time instructor at Sunbury Shores, this class is an opportunity for his students to meet as they so often have, to share dedicated time for their practice, and to receive individual guidance and assistance from artist and teacher, Theresa MacKnight.

The class is a hands-on introduction to screen printing using a photo emulsion process with founder of Little Chair Printing. This workshop will examine the relationship between words and images. Working from the prompt, “What positive message do you want to send to your community?”

The Eastport Arts Center’s Music for Children program is seeking young performers for a musical production of YOU CAN’T SIT HERE—A Children’s Opera, with music by Gregory Biss and script and lyrics by Catherine J.S. Lee, to be performed in October of 2023. Roles are available for young people who can portray 6th or 7th graders. This is a musical and all parts will involve singing; all experience levels are welcome to audition.

The EAC Prize for Poetry, an open contest, will run April 1-June 30. Submissions of original and unpublished poems are welcomed by youth and adult writers on two general themes: ‘The Sea’ and ‘The Woods.’ Winners will be announced on August 26; winning selections will be published in a hard copy magazine format, as well as online via the Arts Center’s website. $1000 in prizes plus other perks will be awarded for the selected poems.

"Peter Powning: A Retrospective" opens Thursday, June 1 at the Tides Institute (43 Water Street). The exhibition features 23 works by renown New Brunswick visual artist, Peter Powning (https://www.powning.com/peter/) and showcases the diverse range of forms and materials in Powning’s art. Drawn from a larger Powning exhibition that was held at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in Fredericton, New Brunswick in the past year, the Powning works are on loan from the Beaverbrook Art Gallery. In 2006, Powning received the Saidye Bronfman Award from the Canada Council for the Arts, the highest distinction for excellence in fine craft in Canada.
Gallery hours beginning June 1 are Wednesday through Saturday, 10 am - 4 pm. An accompanying catalogue of Powning's works is also available for purchase.
