Downeast Lakes Land Trust (DLLT) and Downeast Coastal Conservancy (DCC) have come together to get you out exploring Washington County. The Machias Arts Council is offering a solution for the “winter doldrums” in its first-ever Snow and Ice Sculpture Contest, running January 3 through March 1. Applicants of all ages who are residents of Washington County may participate with up to two entries per contestant.
To participate, when snow falls, entrants create their own original snow and/or ice sculpture in their yard, take a high quality color photo of their sculpture and submit one photo only of it to the Machias Arts Council by March 1 to MACSnowSculpture@gmail.com. Cobscook Institute is offering ongoing classes for pottery over the next few months. In January and February, there will be Monday Night Pottery, Thursday Afternoon Pottery, and Teen Pottery each week. A special pottery workshop for beginners will be held on February 4.

Eastport’s Coast Guard Station will be the subject of a Sunday Afternoons at the Arts Center program on January 15 at 3 pm. Mindy Rivello, Officer in Charge of the Base, and other members of the station will give a talk about the nature of their mission on a day-to-day basis, and will be able to answer attendees’ questions about their duties and the Coast Guard in general.

The Village of Blacks Harbour is turning 50 this year, and to celebrate, public skating events will be held at the Patrick Connors Recreational Complex.
On Sundays through February 19, from 12:45-1:45 pm, children and youth are invited to participate in Pucks and Sticks where they can learn some hockey basics at no cost. On Fridays, come for Public Skating from 5:30-7:30 pm. Admission is $2 a skater. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult to either event.
Adults 55 and up are invited to utilize the flat, indoor walking space at the aquarium for a healthy and protected place to keep moving this winter. Walks will be held at the Fundy Discovery Aquarium on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings from 8:30 to 10 am from January 16 through February 24.
Preregistration is not required. Cost is $2 at the door, or members get in free.

In this two-session workshop (January 4 and 18), author Penny Guisinger will provide tools and approaches to revising prose (fiction or nonfiction). We’ll talk about bringing a cold eye to the page, looking for unnecessary words, and mining an early draft for those gems that emerge as the heart of a finished piece. In an open process of sharing and feedback, participants will shape drafts into more polished manuscripts.

Li'l Bookworms is a weekly story time created for children ages 0-4 held each Thursday at 10 am at Pembroke Library. Youngsters will listen to children's librarian Miss Bonnie (Hunter) read books, learn fun songs, explore simple art activities and enjoy playtime with other children.
Children must be accompanied by caregivers.
This is an opportunity for seniors to get together and have conversation, an opportunity to learn something new, and an opportunity to meet new friends! We will meet online once a week via Zoom, Thursdays 2-3 pm.
