Down East Spring Birding Festival

The annual Down East Spring Birding Festival provides a unique birding experience during spring migration and the breeding season with four days of guided hikes, boat tours, and presentations, all led by local guides with local knowledge.

This year's festival takes place from May 27-29. The festival is headquartered at the Cobscook Institute in Trescott, with Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge in Baring and Edmunds as key meeting areas. For more information or to register, click here.

Amy Ray’s Seaweed Show (and special events)

Artist Amy Ray will be exhibiting a large body of ink paintings, ‘The Seaweed Show,’ beginning Monday, May 23 at EAC’s Washington Street Gallery. The paintings chronicle Ray’s exploration of seaweed from small studies to large scale abstracted works.

The show will run through Sunday, June 26, and is viewable during EAC events or by chance, or during special open hours 1:00 to 3:00 pm, Wednesdays and Thursdays. On Sunday, June 5 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm, there will be an opening artist’s reception with Gulf of Maine, Inc. in attendance offering samples and information about their work in Pembroke. On Thursday, June 23 at 5:00 pm, a presentation about seaweed by the Maine Seaweed Council will take place, and on Sunday, June 26 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm, there will be a closing coffee and conversation event.

Zillman Bird Print Art Show Opening

Our Cobscook Institute Community is invited to view the incredible artwork the Cobscook Experiential Programs students have created in collaboration with The Zillman Art Museum this year. This spring students worked with museum educator and artist Rochelle Lawrence to create their own relief prints of Maine birds. Students researched Maine birds, picked one to illustrate, carved their images on linoleum blocks, and printed images over the course of a two-day workshop.

The exhibit will run from Monday through Friday, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm, through June 24 at the Cobscook Institute.

Choices are between "Eastern Charlotte", "Coastal Charlotte", and "Charlotte East".

Sunbury Shores Arts & Nature Centre has joined with Kingsbrae Gardens and the Huntsman Aquarium to provide summer arts and nature activities for children, starting July 4. On Mondays, the Huntsman Marine Science Centre provides aquarium and classroom experiences, with some beach exploration. Tuesdays thru Fridays, kids will explore and create, utilizing the beautiful gardens and grounds of Kingsbrae and KIRA, with access to nature trails and local beaches. Each class is 9:30 am to 12:00 pm, for $22.23.

Ecstatic Dance has resumed weekly meetings at Eastport Arts Center. All are invited to come and dance to great rhythmic music and move however they wish on Tuesdays from 5:00 - 6:00 pm. Established students and professional artists are invited to register for an upcoming weekend of focused creative and artistic exchange in our pottery studio at the Cobscook Institute. By gathering and working together, we will celebrate our connection as artists, and explore our media in depth.

There will be no formal instruction during this session. Informal critiques may occur if participants desire. Likewise a collaborative project or technique may be explored should the group feel inclined. The atmosphere will encourage independent, focused work, interspersed with periods of verbal exchange around topics of art, inspiration, creativity, and execution of projects, as the need or inclination arises. The workshop will run on June 11 and 12 from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm. Register here.

The Cobscook Institute is offering a slew of creative and adventurous summer camps for youths in the area of all ages. Check out their online offerings on their website, including an August crafting camp (intergenerational, ages 5 and up), an overnight canoe camp in late June for grades 7-9, an outdoor skills camp in July for grades 6-8, and a creative art camp in July for grades 8-12.

Work Group and Poverty Busters with the CCC

The Community Caring Collaborative's Work Group meets with Poverty Busters on Zoom from 1:00-3:00 pm on the first Wednesday of each month. Work Group members are direct service workers, volunteers and agency admins who come together to share resources, support each other and brainstorm solutions to community needs. Poverty Busters are low-income community members, partners from agencies, and other community members working on grassroots strategies to increase poverty awareness locally and to remove the barriers that poverty creates. Both groups are now meeting together to improve communication and to ensure that the CCC is effective in helping to change outcomes for those it serves. Parents, service providers and other community members are welcome!
