Pulped Under Pressure

Join the University of Southern Maine for this exhibition which has two locations: our Art Gallery in Gorham, Maine and our Glickman Library's 7th Floor Reading Room in Portland, Maine. With traditional hand papermaking at its core, PULPED UNDER PRESSURE underscores important contemporary issues steeped in history and craft. Enticed through touch, these works encourage a contemplative slowing down even as they urge acknowledgment of some of the most pressing issues (environmental crisis to global marginalization) facing civilization today.

This is an ongoing exhibit through December 9. The hours for the Art Gallery are 11 AM – 4:30 PM, Tuesday – Saturday. The hours for the Glickman Library are 8 AM – 4 PM, Monday – Friday.

Eastport Arts Center will host the 10th Annual Holiday Market from 10 am to 2 pm, Saturday, November 26. Vendors are sought; booth fee is $25 per table or space. Reservations and queries should be made to Chris Grannis, chris@eastportartscenter.org. Space is limited and will be assigned first-come, first-served.

Eastport Arts Center is at 36 Washington Street, Eastport and eastportartscenter.org, and is handicapped-accessible. The EAC abides by the State of Maine CDC COVID guidelines. Additionally, at this time, the EAC recommends that people wear masks when in our building.

Join the DLLT Forester Ernest Carle and Natural Resource Manager Susan Bard, along with special guest Todd Waldron from the Ruffed Grouse Society/American Woodcock Society, on October 6 for a visit to the Daugherty Ridge Grouse and Woodcock Management Area. Participants will learn about the importance of young forest habitat for Ruffed Grouse, American Woodcock, and dozens of other species.

Dress for the weather and prepare for a short walk on level ground with the potential to encounter thick vegetation. Meet at 3 pm in front of the James Brite School Building at 15 Water Street in Grand Lake Stream.

The monthly Sea Chantey Sing, led by Stephen Sanfilippo on guitar and banjo, will feature songs of shellfish and shellfishers, shellfish mongers and shellfish chowder. Songs of clamming, geoducks, chowders and mongers, plus the Maryland-Virginia Oyster war.

The chantey sing will take place on October 6 at 6 pm.

Tall Ship Nao Trinidad, a replica of the expedition flagship captained by Ferdinand Magellan, will lay anchor in St. Andrews October 7 to 9. Nao Trinidad was the flagship of Magellan’s expedition that led to the first circumnavigation of the earth, confirming for the first time that the world was round. This year marks the 500th anniversary of this adventure and it is being celebrated with an extensive exhibition on board the vessel.

Tickets are $15 for adults, $5 for kids, or $35 for a family, and are available at the dock or at www.naotrinidad.org.

Washington County Turkey-A-Thon

The 18th annual Turkey-A-Thon is going on in Washington County, and all who are able are called to help provide a healthy meal for their neighbors during the holiday season.

On Friday, October 7, community volunteers will be accepting donations at seven locations around the county. Every dollar raised will be used to purchase gift certificates at local grocery stores that will be distributed to all Washington County food pantries.

Donations will be accepted from 7 am - 5 pm at the Woodland IGA in Baileyville, Bayside Market in Milbridge, Four Corners Shop-n-Save in Columbia, Flat Iron Corner in Lubec, Dunkin in Machias, VL Tammaro in Calais, and First National Bank in Eastport.

The Little K Gallery in Eastport will have a “Fairy Garden” to explore on their lot at 76 High Street from July 22 - September 5, weather permitting. Adults and children will enjoy finding the little fairy picnic, a fairy house, fairy cafe, and other miniatures. While visiting, browse art in the little gallery and if you see something you like inside the box, take it! It’s free! (but leave the fairy scenes until September for others to enjoy first). Please feel inspired to bring any of your own little creations to the garden or gallery box too.

Additional books will be added as they become available.
