Haiku & Haiga Workshop with Catherine J.S. Lee

Eastport Arts Center (EAC) 36 Washington Street, Eastport

Please join internationally-published haiku poet and haiga artist Catherine J.S. Lee at Eastport Arts Center for a two-session workshop on writing haiku and creating photo-haiga (an image-plus-haiku art form). Participants will learn some haiku basics and will practice them at the workshop and between the sessions, which will be held Fridays, July 30th and August 6th, from 1:30 to 3 pm.
Catherine J.S. Lee’s haiku have been published widely and won numerous awards, including her haiku collection, All That Remains, which won the 2010 Turtle Light Press Haiku Chapbook Competition. She has led haiku workshops in local schools, at Sunrise Senior College of the University of Maine at Machias, and at the Haiku Circle in Northfield, Massachusetts. Lee was named an “emerging voice in English-language haiku” in A New Resonance 7 from Red Moon Press, the foremost haiku publisher in the U.S. She edited and designed A Splash of Water, the 2015 Haiku Society of America members’ anthology.
This free program is geared for attendees ages 12 and up, and space is limited. Please email alison@eastportartscenter.org to preregister. Figure Drawing Summer Class

Sunbury Shores Arts and Nature Centre 139 Water Street, St. Andrews

Whether you are new to figure drawing, or you are looking to improve your skills, this 4-week class is for you!

Your instructor will guide you through the steps of drawing a figure from photographs and life, presenting different strategies for approaching poses of short and long duration, and poses with varying levels of complexity.

This course will cover gesture and rhythm, sighting and measuring, lighting and value, and touch on basic proportion, construction, and anatomy.

Students are requested to bring their own sketchbook and sketching materials (recommend 18 x 24 newsprint/cartridge paper pads/assorted pencils/charcoals). Basic kits are available to purchase from SSANC.

Skills Covered: Wheel: Throwing with two pounds or more, making larger pieces and pieces composed of two or more sections, lids, handles, spouts, pieces in sets. Hand building: Making pieces with lids, spouts, handles, sculptural work, pieces in sets. Glazing with multiple glazes, surface decoration techniques with slips and stains.
