Flash fiction event: “Scarecrows of Machias”

The Machias Arts Council will be hosting a flash fiction event featuring the works of Machias residents and surrounding communities. The theme will be “Scarecrows of Machias” and will run in parallel to the annual Scarecrow Contest hosted by the Machias Bay Area Chamber of Commerce.

Chosen stories will be promoted and published across multiple platforms, including online and in print and a prize will be awarded for “Best Story.” Local writers should submit their scarecrow-themed works of approximately 500 words to MACFlashFiction@gmail.com by October 16.

Festive Fundraiser Encourages Ornament-Makers to Begin Collecting Materials

EAC's 13th Annual Festival of Trees will be held on Saturday, December 10. Community members are encouraged to begin gathering materials to create ornaments for trees for the festival, as part of pleasant summer excursions by the sea and in the woods. Pinecones, wildflowers, fanciful twigs, pine needles, dried fruits, feathers, seed pods and other natural objects all are possibilities for one-of-a-kind decorations.

Maine Gardener Training

The Maine Gardener Training is designed to supply learners with a foundation in horticulture education and skills for use in their personal garden and is recommended for those who would like to access the educational content of the Master Gardener Volunteer training program but are not interested or able to volunteer.

The birds are singing; the earth is warming and so are our tea pots! The Eleanor's Tea program is back at Roosevelt Campobello International Park for another season! We will be offering two free teas each day this season. The first tea will be at 11:00 am Atlantic (10:00 am Eastern) and will be on a first come first serve basis. The second tea of the day will be at 3:00 pm Atlantic (2:00 pm Eastern) and can be reserved ahead of time through the link on our website.

Join the University of Southern Maine for this exhibition which has two locations: our Art Gallery in Gorham, Maine and our Glickman Library's 7th Floor Reading Room in Portland, Maine. With traditional hand papermaking at its core, PULPED UNDER PRESSURE underscores important contemporary issues steeped in history and craft. Enticed through touch, these works encourage a contemplative slowing down even as they urge acknowledgment of some of the most pressing issues (environmental crisis to global marginalization) facing civilization today.

This is an ongoing exhibit through December 9. The hours for the Art Gallery are 11 AM – 4:30 PM, Tuesday – Saturday. The hours for the Glickman Library are 8 AM – 4 PM, Monday – Friday.

While visiting, browse art in the little gallery and if you see something you like inside the box, take it! It’s free! (but leave the fairy scenes until September for others to enjoy first). Please feel inspired to bring any of your own little creations to the garden or gallery box too.
