Sir William Van Horne

The owner of the Island Estate, Sir William Van Horne, was a gifted painter and, prior to World War I, the owner of Canada's largest private art collection. Take a unique journey into the man and his times thru the World Premiere of the Van Horne Art Exhibit titled "From the Last Spike to Art Connoisseur: A Journey with Sir William Cornelius Van Horne". The Curator of Canada's largest railroad museum, Exporail, has carefully chosen a selection of Van Horne's paintings, added banners to explain their history and meaning, and created this one-of-a-kind art exhibit which will be shown first on Ministers Island. The exhibit will run from July 1 to September 30.

Wabanaki Cultural Center 39 Union Street, Calais

The collection of Passamaquoddy basket artist Gal Frey are now on display at the Wabanaki Cultural Center in Calais and will remain viewable through 2024. Frey is well known nationally for her expertise with traditional ash and sweetgrass baskets. Her collection includes the baskets of many artists, some going back a hundred years.

Free and open to the public. There will be no library staff supervision, so please have young children accompanied by an adult.

The St. George Royal Canadian Branch 38 holds weekly events and the community is invited. On Monday, TOPS is held at 6:00 pm; contact Jimmy at 755-6042 for Cribbage Monday Nights. On Tuesdays, doors open for BINGO at 5:00 pm; early bird game starts at 6:30 and the regular game is on at 7:00. Every Friday night is Seniors Cards party, call Jimmy for more info.

EAC to Host Biweekly Writers Group

Eastport Arts Center (EAC) 36 Washington Street, Eastport

A writers’ group for people seeking help and constructive input on their in-progress work is scheduled to kick off Monday, February 6, at the Eastport Arts Center. The group, led by published author Catherine J.S. Lee and retired writing teacher Paula Horvath, will meet every other Monday beginning at 6:30 pm at the Center for about two hours. Suggested donation of $5/session; sliding fee scale is available by request (no one turned away). To get involved, email writers@eastportartscenter.org with an introduction and a bit about your current work.
