Gyotaku-Inspired Aquatic Prints

Eastport Arts Center (EAC) 36 Washington Street, Eastport

Popular EAC instructor Sara Myrick will lead a workshop, Gyotaku-Inspired Aquatic Prints, from 1-4 pm, Saturday, January 22, at Eastport Arts Center. In an exploration of monoprinting with gelatin plates, participants will learn to create multi-layered prints, starting with aquatic background imagery, then adding images of fish on top. Rather than the traditional fish bodies (the Japanese gyotaku technique, which dates back to the 1800s, was originally used by fishermen to record their catches), Myrick’s students will use textured rubber and wooden forms, stencils and cutout silhouettes to create images of underwater worlds on paper or blank cards.

Eastport Arts Center is at 36 Washington Street, Eastport and, and is handicapped-accessible. EAC abides by State of Maine CDC COVID guidelines. Additionally, at this time, patrons are required to wear masks when in the EAC building.
