CulturePass is your window into the artistic and cultural richness of the greater international Passamaquoddy region including Cobscook and Passamaquoddy Bays and the St. Croix River.
The Sunday Afternoons at the EAC series, a winter offering of informal and interactive programs every Sunday at 3 pm at Eastport Arts Center, continues with Captain Bob Peacock, presenting on The Art of Piloting in Passamaquoddy Bay, on February 2. The Maine Pilotage Commission requires the use of local pilots for foreign flag vessels with a draft greater than nine feet and United States vessels engaged in international trade. Vessels uncertain of local conditions need aid to approach strange ports day or night, and jumping off a relatively small boat onto a fast-moving ship in the dark is not an easy matter! Captain Peacock will talk about the joys and fears, science, skills, winds and tides (including serious tide rips and keeping small problems from becoming major emergencies in seconds)—all facets of his art. In the past, not everyone spoke English. Adding to the fun is a “blind corner” as a ship entering the bay can’t see a ship coming down the St. Croix River.
