Documentary: The Doctrine of Discovery: Unmasking The Domination Code

September 14 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Eastport Arts Center (EAC) 36 Washington Street
Eastport, ME 04631 United States
+ Google Map

Eastport Arts Center will present a screening of the 2014 documentary film “The Doctrine of Discovery: Unmasking The Domination Code,” on Saturday, September 14 at 7 pm. Created by Dakota filmmaker Shelden Wolfchild and Shawnee/Lenape scholar Steven T. Newcomb, based on Newcomb’s book, Pagans in the Promised Land: Decoding the Doctrine of Christian Discovery, the film tells the story of how little-known Vatican documents of the fifteenth century resulted in a tragic global momentum of domination and dehumanization. Christian European exploration, supported by a Papal Bull and the greed of European royalty, is demonstrated to have disregarded the humanity and basic rights of indigenous peoples around the world. With a particular emphasis on the western hemisphere, the film shows how even today, Canada and the United States have laws which have evolved from the attitudes of 500 years ago.
