Birds of a Feather Exhibition

For this show three artist have created works using their own interpretation of the same species of birds. Dianna Ammons Johnson expresses her passion for birds through her photography.  Bonnie Clymer began to experiment with combining gold leaf and oil painting while and discovered that a gold leaf background placed emphasis on the shape and texture of the image it surrounded. Michael Morse is a folk artist who uses driftwood, glass, found objects and a sense of humor to create three dimensional pieces.  Birds are a favorite subject and many of the natural items used often have bird-like qualities.

Eastport Arts Center’s Summer Workshop Series continues with a workshop for all ages in plant prints with Sara Rackliff Myrick on Tuesday, July 30 from noon-2 pm. Participants will explore a variety of print possibilities using organic materials, paint, and printmaking on a small muslin bag to bring home. Participants are also welcome to bring their own print materials and/or additional fabric items to print. Workshop fee is $10; all materials are included and space is limited. To participate, please preregister.

Zen DownEast, a welcoming group of meditation practitioners,
 meets Tuesdays from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. at the Downeast Massage Therapy building at 848 U.S. Rte 1, Pembroke, ME.  The one-hour meetings include Zen meditation, Zen liturgy, and meditation
 instruction. We also offer drop-in classes on the writings of Zen Master Eihei Dogen from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm which you are warmly invited to join at any time.  If you are new to Zen DownEast, please arrive fifteen minutes early for a brief orientation. Zen DownEast is committed to creating an inclusive sangha and strives to embody the ideals of mutuality and  interdependence. Machias Seal Island Through the Seasons, with Ralph Eldridge, Machias Seal Island Lightkeeper.  Ralph has been a lightkeeper for 40 years, 14 of them spent on Machias, an important breeding colony for Atlantic puffins and other seabirds and the only disputed boundary between Canada and the USA.  In 2014 Ralph spotted the first tufted puffin to be seen on the Atlantic coast since the 1830s, and he managed to photograph it! His presentation will focus on his experiences over the years in stories and photographs that capture the island’s changing landscape and wildlife through the seasons. Admission by donation.
