Birds of a Feather Exhibition

Eastport Breakwater Gallery 93 Water Street, Eastport

For this show three artist have created works using their own interpretation of the same species of birds. Dianna Ammons Johnson expresses her passion for birds through her photography.  Bonnie Clymer began to experiment with combining gold leaf and oil painting while and discovered that a gold leaf background placed emphasis on the shape and texture of the image it surrounded. Michael Morse is a folk artist who uses driftwood, glass, found objects and a sense of humor to create three dimensional pieces.  Birds are a favorite subject and many of the natural items used often have bird-like qualities.

The sky was….blue? Writing the Summer Landscape with Jonathan Sapers

Sunbury Shores Arts and Nature Centre 139 Water Street, St. Andrews

How do you describe the summer? It’s almost impossible not to start with the temperature and the comparative brightness of the sun and if we are lucky enough to be in a place like St. Andrews, with the water, the trees, the birds and the whales. And can you really describe what happens in the summer – say summer love -- without framing it with summer details? As a result, describing what the sky was like in the summer in a short story or essay can become an exercise in rendering emotion or opinion through detail. In this course, we will experiment with describing our summer landscape in the creation of either short stories or essays based in St Andrews.

Music on the Rocks: Kris and Ally Paproki

Sutherland Amphitheater Water Street, Eastport

A free, outdoor concert featuring Kris and Ally Paprocki jokingly call their music “Country-Eastern.” They play and sing ballads, old songs, and dance tunes from Maine, New England, Maritime Canada, and our very own Washington County. These regions are all linked culturally and historically, and share a similar repertoire of folk music. Kris and Ally find songs in historical society archives, newspapers, collections of old songs, 19th century sheet music, recorded interviews, university archives and more. They perform these songs as traditionally as they can with vocals unaccompanied; or with guitar, fiddle, and accordion. Audience members will hear songs about naval battles, coastal life, adventure in the lumber woods, dance tunes once heard in the local grange halls, and more. Singing along is encouraged and greatly appreciated! Rain location TBA.
