The goal of impressionism is to capture the feel and emotional impact of the subject portrayed rather than just creating a literal depiction of it. In this course, every level of painter will learn how to free up their hand and mind towards a more exuberant and forgiving style of painting. This is an excellent opportunity for absolute beginners as instruction is easygoing and highly individual. You may choose to work in the studio or outside with oils or acrylics as the recommended media. This course will begin with some clear, practical drawing exercises to enhance observation and portrayal skills. The remainder of the course will be devoted to individual instruction in the mediums, styles and subjects of each learner’s choosing. This is an excellent opportunity for students to expand their knowledge of their favourite medium or learn the basic skills of a new one. Students will also learn a great deal through demonstration given to others in their mediums and styles.

Book Launch: “The North Atlantic Right Whale,” with author Joann Hamilton-Barry, Director, Saint John Free Public Library. The North Atlantic right whale, one of the largest whales in the world, was considered nearly extinct by the 1950s. It has experienced a slow recovery due to conservation efforts in the late 20th century, however, commercial fishing-related deaths in recent years, including the loss of at least 17 whales in 2017 has put the species at a level of critical endangerment.  The next few decades will determine its survival.  Offering background on the whale’s history, unique biology and behaviour, information on what is killing them and how readers can help, “The North Atlantic Right Whale” is an accessible book that will spark action and increased awareness of the plight of this majestic creature.  1:00 pm - book signing and sales will follow the talk and reading.
