Sunrise County Food Alliance will be holding their annual soils and gardens class on Saturday, April 27, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. It will be an outdoor class at the farms of Michael Hayden and Becka Gagne. Michael Hayden is a market and community gardener who runs Folklore Farm and leads the Incredible Edible Garden, a community garden in Milbridge. He will be showing his method of intensive market gardening adapted for Downeast Maine. Topics will include growing in greenhouses, irrigation, simple soil science, and simplifying small farm systems. We will meet at Folklore Farm from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Becka Gagne farms at Schoodic Hollow Farm, a small permaculture homestead in Franklin, with renovated apple trees, small fruits, nut trees, vegetables, and a small flock of mixed fowl. She will be teaching about ways to reduce weeding and watering times and improve soil by mulching, permaculture plants that are easy to grow, and the basics of her main crop – Garlic – a hearty, solid plant that is happy to grow in Maine with the right treatment. We will meet at Schoodic Hollow Farm from 1:00 to 4:30 p.m.
