The Machias Arts Council is offering a solution for the “winter doldrums” in its first-ever Snow and Ice Sculpture Contest, running January 3 through March 1. Applicants of all ages who are residents of Washington County may participate with up to two entries per contestant.
To participate, when snow falls, entrants create their own original snow and/or ice sculpture in their yard, take a high quality color photo of their sculpture and submit one photo only of it to the Machias Arts Council by March 1 to MACSnowSculpture@gmail.com. The Village of Blacks Harbour is turning 50 this year, and to celebrate, public skating events will be held at the Patrick Connors Recreational Complex.
On Sundays through February 19, from 12:45-1:45 pm, children and youth are invited to participate in Pucks and Sticks where they can learn some hockey basics at no cost. On Fridays, come for Public Skating from 5:30-7:30 pm. Admission is $2 a skater. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult to either event.

Work Group and Poverty Busters with the CCC
The Community Caring Collaborative's Work Group meets with Poverty Busters on Zoom from 1:00-3:00 pm on the first Wednesday of each month. Work Group members are direct service workers, volunteers and agency admins who come together to share resources, support each other and brainstorm solutions to community needs. Poverty Busters are low-income community members, partners from agencies, and other community members working on grassroots strategies to increase poverty awareness locally and to remove the barriers that poverty creates. Both groups are now meeting together to improve communication and to ensure that the CCC is effective in helping to change outcomes for those it serves. Parents, service providers and other community members are welcome!

EAC: “Itajime As An Imaginative Space”
EAC invites artists to indulge in color and pattern in a two-session weekend workshop with fabric artist Susan Lehnen on February 3 and 4. “Itajime As An Imaginative Space” will take methods from traditional Japanese itajime fabric dyeing and printing as a structural springboard for artistic exploration. The class, for ages 16 and up, will be held from 4-7 pm, Friday, February 3, and from 1-4 pm, Saturday, February 4. A $60 fee covers all materials, and also light refreshments. Winter Fun Day starts with an easy walk to a quarry pond for some ice skating! From there, you can hike or snowshoe a short distance to gravel hills left behind by a glacier. Bring a sled to slide down the snowy hills (we will have a few toboggans to share). Afterwards, warm up by the bonfire and roast some s'mores! Some ice skates, snowshoes, and toboggans are provided! Please come prepared to be outdoors in winter weather.

Cabin fever Films will present free movies open to the public at the Lubec Memorial Library every two weeks beginning on January 7. All shows will begin at 3 pm. The first program will be the movie Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris.
There will be free popcorn and drinks, donations are welcome.

It's that time of year again! Come for the famous Indoor Ice Fishing Derby at the Lubec America Legion on February 4. Dinner starts at 5 pm and the tournament starts at 6.
