Washington County Fair
Washington County Fair
It’s fair time in Maine and we invite you to the Washington County Fair on August 26 and 27. The fair will be held at the Pembroke Fairgrounds on Old County Road in Pembroke from 9 am to 4 pm each day. Admission is $8 per day, with 10 and under free of charge. With all your favorite events, children’s activities, musical guests and vendors, there is something for everyone including Lyon’s Towing Touch A Truck who will demonstrate their new rotator; an antique car and tractor show on Saturday and a V8 mini modified tractor pull and pedal tractor pull on Sunday.

EAC Films will present the Japanese film Tampopo (1985, NR) on Sunday, August 27 at 7 pm. Directed by Juzo Itami, the newly restored “ramen western” is an audience favorite ‘food film’. Admission for the film is $7. Following a short break after the film, there will be a discussion group with Jon Bragdon for any who wish to participate.

St. Andrews Film Society: Rosie
Canadian Indigenous actor and filmmaker Gail Maurice crafted this wonderful heart-warming comedy-drama about a six-year-old adopted Indigenous girl in 1984 Montreal who is taken by child services to live with her adopted aunt after her adopted Indigenous mother (Sixties scoop) dies. The aunt wants no part of it. Maurice was pressured to make Rosie a dark film about being gay and Indigenous in 1984, but she wisely stood her ground and made a comedy-drama. Winner of multiple festival awards.

Down East Tintypes: Documenting the Down East Region by John DiMartino
New York City historic tintype photographer, John DiMartino, opens his Down East tintype exhibit featuring one-of-a-kind photos printed on metal using a process popular in the mid 19th century. John has spent two years+ documenting occupations, scenery, historic buildings, and local characters in the Maritimes and coastal Maine.
All works are for sale and can be taken home immediately. Refreshments will be served. Please join us on August 4 7-9 pm for the launch of this exciting new exhibit, meet the artist, and take home a work of rare photographic artwork that will only appreciate in value. Exhibit runs July 31-September 22.

Submissions wanted for 10th Annual Square Foot Show
The 10th Annual Square Foot Show will be the grand finale of the 2023 season at the Grand Manan Art Gallery. This show is popular with both artists and visitors to the Gallery. The objective is to pack as much punch as possible into one square foot of space. This event is a major fund raiser for the gallery. Up to four pieces may be submitted, and all the artwork will be priced at $200. There will be an entry fee of $10 per piece, and a modest 25% commission on sales.
If you wish to participate in the Square Foot Show, download an entry form from our website (grandmananartgallery.com) and submit it to the Gallery office by September 4. The Entry Fee of $10 per submission is payable by e-transfer (gmag2121@gmail.com).

Paintings of Campobello and Lubec created in a lively color style with many impressionist and expressionist aspects. Nella Godbey Storm has shown her work nationally since 1966 in galleries. She has created in many media and over the years, has worked designing gold jewelry, ceramic mosaics, textiles, and historic and contemporary interiors, both privately, and for an architectural firm based in New York City. Observations and work done on location on beautiful Campobello and Lubec inspire Godbey Storm by their remarkable juxtaposition of color and texture. Enjoying her 38th year of visiting Campobello and Lubec, she continues to be amazed and surprised with their glorious views and scenes. Painted in acrylic on acid free paper and framed archival with museum quality glass. Her work will be on display the entire month of August. This is her fourth show at the Lubec library again 20% of sales donated to that institution.

The Eastport Arts Center’s Music for Children program is seeking young performers for a musical production of YOU CAN’T SIT HERE—A Children’s Opera, with music by Gregory Biss and script and lyrics by Catherine J.S. Lee, to be performed in October of 2023. Roles are available for young people who can portray 6th or 7th graders. This is a musical and all parts will involve singing; all experience levels are welcome to audition.

The 35th Eastport Salmon & Seafood Festival will be held September 2 and 3 in the historic downtown district. Seafood Saturday's lunch will feature crab rolls and clam chowder under the tent in the Fisherman Statue parking lot. Salmon Sunday showcases the big barbecued salmon dinner with Raye's Mustard Winter Garden sauce, roasted potatoes, buttered peas, homemade rolls, and Maine blueberry dessert.

New York City historic tintype photographer, John DiMartino, opens his Down East tintype exhibit featuring one-of-a-kind photos printed on metal using a process popular in the mid 19th century. John has spent two years+ documenting occupations, scenery, historic buildings, and local characters in the Maritimes and coastal Maine.
All works are for sale and can be taken home immediately. Refreshments will be served. Please join us on August 4 7-9 pm for the launch of this exciting new exhibit, meet the artist, and take home a work of rare photographic artwork that will only appreciate in value. A writers’ group for people seeking help and constructive input on their in-progress work is scheduled to kick off Monday, February 6, at the Eastport Arts Center. The group, led by published author Catherine J.S. Lee and retired writing teacher Paula Horvath, will meet every other Monday beginning at 6:30 pm at the Center for about two hours. Suggested donation of $5/session; sliding fee scale is available by request (no one turned away). Music for Children auditions underway
The Eastport Arts Center’s Music for Children program is seeking young performers for a musical production of YOU CAN’T SIT HERE—A Children’s Opera, with music by Gregory Biss and script and lyrics by Catherine J.S. Lee, to be performed in October of 2023. Roles are available for young people who can portray 6th or 7th graders. This is a musical and all parts will involve singing; all experience levels are welcome to audition.

Work Group and Poverty Busters with the CCC
The Community Caring Collaborative's Work Group meets with Poverty Busters on Zoom from 1:00-3:00 pm on the first Wednesday of each month. Work Group members are direct service workers, volunteers and agency admins who come together to share resources, support each other and brainstorm solutions to community needs. Poverty Busters are low-income community members, partners from agencies, and other community members working on grassroots strategies to increase poverty awareness locally and to remove the barriers that poverty creates. Both groups are now meeting together to improve communication and to ensure that the CCC is effective in helping to change outcomes for those it serves. Parents, service providers and other community members are welcome!

Far East to Down East: Contemporary Japanese Art
MOTHERS Gallery is delighted to announce a special exhibition, ‘Far East to Down East: Contemporary Japanese Art’, featuring the art of 16 artists from Sakai, near Osaka, Japan. The show will be from September 7-21. The artists’ work is contemporary yet created using traditional Japanese materials and methods. It is a meeting of east and west, old and new. Their means of expression include painting, drawing, sculpture, print making, mixed media, glass, and calligraphy.
There will be a reception on Sunday, September 11, from 4-6 pm — all are welcome. Open May through September, 10 am to 5 pm, Thursday through Saturday.

EAC’s new Game Gathering will be held every Thursday, 10 am-noon, June 15 to September 1. A fall schedule will be determined. Game Gathering attendees are invited to pick from a variety of traditional and new board and card games that will be available to choose from to play individually or with friends. Author Talk: Les Simon
Les Simon is a published author and poet living and writing in rural Downeast Maine. His first Young Adult novel, “The Secret of the Red Silk Pouch” was published by Royal Fireworks Press. His other writings include Adult Fiction, Short Stories, Poems, and a first Science Fiction novel, “Beyond Orion: an Alien Alliance”. Simon also edited and published “The Aputamkon Review, Volumes I-IV”, a collection of contributing Artists from Maine and the Canadian Maritimes, to Florida and Australia. He is a long-term member of the Porter Poets who meet monthly at the Porter Memorial Library in Machias, Maine, and gives Fiction and Poetry workshops.

After a short business meeting Tom Moffatt of St. Stephen will present a program on perhaps the most interesting and controversial character to live in the St. Croix Valley in the early days of the settlement - William Vance, later known as Old Vance.

September Art Exhibit at the Library: Rox Corbett
Rox Corbett is an award-winning charcoal artist who makes representational drawings mostly of animals. Her pictures are detailed and textural, somewhat abstract in composition, and full of shadows and light. An important aspect to her work is conveying the behavior or spirit of the animals she depicts, sometimes in humorous ways.
The exhibit can be viewed during regular library hours. A percentage of all sales will benefit the library.

Gene Nichols, new Director of Quoddy Voices, is taking singers’ requests for the choir’s fall season, which begins Tuesday, September 12, 6-8 pm. Performances are scheduled for December 15-17. The group welcomes singers of all levels of experience; no audition is required.

Music for Children auditions underway
The Eastport Arts Center’s Music for Children program is seeking young performers for a musical production of YOU CAN’T SIT HERE—A Children’s Opera, with music by Gregory Biss and script and lyrics by Catherine J.S. Lee, to be performed in October of 2023. Roles are available for young people who can portray 6th or 7th graders. This is a musical and all parts will involve singing; all experience levels are welcome to audition.

will present an Open Show inspired by the Luminist movement September 6-28. An exhibition opening reception will be offered on Saturday, September 9, 2-4 pm. Luminism was a 19th century art movement characterized by a treatment of light emphasizing a luminous, uniform glow.

Far East to Down East: Contemporary Japanese Art
MOTHERS Gallery is delighted to announce a special exhibition, ‘Far East to Down East: Contemporary Japanese Art’, featuring the art of 16 artists from Sakai, near Osaka, Japan. The show will be from September 7-21. The artists’ work is contemporary yet created using traditional Japanese materials and methods. It is a meeting of east and west, old and new. Their means of expression include painting, drawing, sculpture, print making, mixed media, glass, and calligraphy.
There will be a reception on Sunday, September 11, from 4-6 pm — all are welcome. Open May through September, 10 am to 5 pm, Thursday through Saturday.

EAC’s new Game Gathering will be held every Thursday, 10 am-noon, June 15 to September 1. A fall schedule will be determined. Game Gathering attendees are invited to pick from a variety of traditional and new board and card games that will be available to choose from to play individually or with friends. Light refreshments will be provided, and attendees are encouraged to bring their own games to play: role-playing games, board games, or whatever suits the players’ fancy.

World Dance at EAC
EAC is pleased to announce a new class, World Dance, to meet on the second and fourth Thursday of each month, 4-5 pm, beginning April 13. The group will learn modern and classic international dances from around the globe, including Pata Pata and Jerusalem, along with line dances. Providing both a great form of exercise and an engaging new skill, the class is offered on a drop-in basis; no preregistration is necessary. A $5/class donation is appreciated.

Natural Plaster Workshop
Join Liz Johndrow of Earthen Endeavors to learn natural and traditional plastering techniques! With hands-on instruction as well as presentations about different approaches, this is a workshop for renovation, using natural materials, and traditional techniques appropriate for historic houses. This class will cover applications on both lath and drywall in a 1850s home in Pembroke.
