Walkabout: A Photographic Exhibit
September 24, 2020 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
An event every week that begins at 9:00 am on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, repeating until September 25, 2020
Walkabout is a exhibition of 54 photographic diptychs (16″x20″) inspired by my year-round daily walks on Grand Manan, in all kinds of weather, with my hiking companions: Milly, a 10-year-old Wire-Haired Pointing Griffon Korthals dog, and Marduk, an 11-year-old black shorthaired cat.
The natural beauty of Grand Manan is the reason I live here. I have loved this island’s rugged geography, its ocean vistas, its skies, its mosses and meadows, since I was a young child visiting every summer at our North Head family cottage. I used to love the smell of smoked herring, the many fisheries, watching a weir being seined, going whale watching. But things have changed. The herring are mostly gone and the whales are going too. These photographs aren’t just about the beauty of this island, they are about the transience of life and the consequences of our actions and our interactions with this environment. I celebrate the beauty and marvel at it, but I also encounter much death on my walks, because when you’re on foot you see more, and I find it impossible to remain blind to the garbage, the carelessness or the greed of our species which I am constantly reminded of.
I have been an avid photographer for many years and own many cameras, but they were awkward to carry on walks, so I rarely did. The photos in this exhibit were taken with an iPhone 7 and an iPhone 11 Pro. My current practice of photographing what catches my eye on a walk has me more aware of my surroundings, and has me thinking about the continuities, disjuncts and connections between things. My now large photo archive clearly reveals my preoccupations: the environment and our impact on it, my appreciation of the human need to make a mark in the sand, to build something out of the flotsam and jetsam, and my desire to reflect upon and record the passing of a life, be it that of a herring gull, a lighthouse, a whale or a butterfly.
