Sunday Afternoons at the EAC: Annual Harpsichord Hour with Gregory Biss
February 23 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pmFree
The Sunday Afternoons at the EAC series, a winter offering of informal and interactive programs every Sunday at 3 pm at Eastport Arts Center, continues with the popular annual Harpsichord Hour program on February 23. “I’m looking forward to my annual battle with this ancient and ever useful instrument,” says presenter and performer Gregory Biss. “In past seasons I have generally featured a single composer or genre for the content of such programs. This time I’ll be playing an eclectic selection of some favorite music from 16th, 17th, 18th and 20th century European traditions, supplemented by commentary on that music and on the harpsichord.”
EAC’s beloved harpsichord gets a moment in the limelight with this program. An 18th century-style, single-manual instrument, it was built in 1964 by Eric Herz in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Presenter Biss was born in Illinois and educated in New England and Germany. His music has been performed by the Denver Symphony, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Vermeer Quartet. Retired from a 20-year career as a scuba diver in the aquaculture industry, Biss remains active as a piano technician and as a faculty member at Summer Keys in Lubec. He is currently President of the EAC Board.
Sunday Afternoons at the EAC programs are held downstairs at the EAC. Hot drinks and refreshments are offered; donations are gratefully accepted. The series will run through April, skipping Easter Sunday.
