Stage East Directing Workshop

February 12 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm UTC-5

Stage East will begin a new Directing Workshop on February 12; the group will meet every other week on Mondays through May 20, from 6-8:30 pm. Led by experienced director and longtime Stage East President Brian Schuth, the workshop aims to bring together people who are serious about learning to direct or about deepening their directing practice by doing hands-on exercises. Interested participants are asked to obtain a copy of Directing for the Stage by Terry John Converse (currently $21 online), and read the first chapter in advance of the first class.

No previous experience is required. However, people with extensive experience are also welcome! All participants are expected to direct their own exercises and to perform as actors in other participant’s exercises. Participants may need to schedule time outside of the workshop itself to prepare more elaborate exercises. It is crucial that participants commit to attending as many of the sessions as possible as one cannot do the exercises without people together in the space.

In addition to the exercises, there will be discussion of the practical hands-on issues directors face when working in community theatre in Washington County.

Workshop leader Brian Schuth has been the President of Stage East for more than half of its existence. He started directing in 1998 with Shakespeare’s The Tempest, and has directed more

than 30 plays since then, ranging from Charlotte’s Web to David Mamet.

Those interested are asked to contact Schuth prior to the first session, by email at or by phone at 207-853-0823.

The workshop is offered by a suggested donation of $50 to Eastport Arts Center for hosting and supporting the sessions, payable at the first meeting. No individual is being paid for their time; no one will be turned away for lack of funds. The workshop has a minimum enrollment of 4, and a maximum of 12.
