The Pembroke Historical Society is honored to host a showing of Charles Lagerbom’s Zoom presentation “Risk & Reward off Cape Horn: The Story of Captain Jesse Thayer Carver, of Searsport, Maine, and the Wreck of the Maine-built Downeaster St. Mary,” on Tuesday, January 18th, starting at 6:00 PM Eastern Standard Time. The registration link follows the program description.
Captain Jesse Thayer Carver of Searsport gambled everything he owned on a single ship and voyage; one that would make or break him. The ship was the large down-easter St. Mary, her destination San Francisco, and Carver’s big challenge was to get her around Cape Horn. What followed is a tale of storms, tragedy, and loss, but also one of redemption and return. Captain Carver and St. Mary represent an important chapter of Maine maritime history; a time when ambitious men challenged the seas with wooden sailing ships in high risk, high reward ventures.
The evening’s presenter, Charles H. Lagerbom received his MA in History/Archaeology at the University of Maine with work on a Revolutionary War Truckhouse excavated on Penobscot River. An avid diver, he organized underwater surveys of ship remains in Maine lakes, the 1779 Penobscot Expedition, and the 17th century English galleon Angel Gabriel off Pemaquid, and spent two field seasons in Antarctica with the University of Maine Quaternary {Climate Change} Institute. A published author, he has given guest lectures on topics covering Antarctica, Cape Horn, Maine’s whaling industry, and New England colonial and maritime history. He teaches Advanced Placement United States History at Belfast Area High School and makes his home on the coast of Maine.
