Pulped Under Pressure Curatorial Lecture

November 3, 2022 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm UTC-5

Join us for an evening of conversation with the curators of the USM Art Gallery’s current exhibition, Pulped Under Pressure, on November 3 at 6 pm. With traditional hand papermaking at its core, Pulped Under Pressure underscores important contemporary issues steeped in history and craft. The conversation will include the history of papermaking, the backstory about the art and artists in “Pulped Under Pressure,” and a few additional contemporary artists also working with handmade paper. There will be plenty of time for a Q&A.

Stated below offers some biographical account and general insight into two out of the seven artists whose work is represented at the USM Art Gallery:

In 2017, Reni Gower received SECAC’s Award for Outstanding Artistic Achievement. In 2014, she received the College Art Association’s Distinguished Teacher of Art Award. Her artwork is represented in many prestigious collections and has been exhibited at international and national venues for over 40 years. In addition to her painting practice, she curates award-winning traveling exhibitions. After 37 years, Professor Emerita Gower retired from Virginia Commonwealth University in December 2018. She holds a MFA from Syracuse University, a MA from the University of Minnesota-Duluth, and a BS with Honors from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Melissa Potter is a multi-media artist, curator and writer. She is the recipient of three Fulbright Fellowships to Serbia, Bosnia, and Hercegovina with residencies through ArtsLink and the Trust for Mutual Understanding. Her work has been shown internationally, and her essays have been published in BOMB, Art Papers, a d Flash Art. Her curatorial project, Social Paper: Hand Papermaking in the Context of Socially Engaged Art, examined hand-papermaking as socially engaged art. She holds an MFA from Rutgers University and BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University.
