Maine Open Lighthouse Day

September 11 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm UTC-5

This popular annual event (sponsored by the United States Coast Guard, the Maine Office of Tourism and the American Lighthouse Foundation) attracts between 15,000 to 18,000 visitors each year, and offers the general public the rare opportunity to climb and learn about over two dozen historic Maine lights.

Coordinates: 44°48′ 55″ N 66°57′ 04″ W

West Quoddy Head, in Quoddy Head State Park, Lubec, Maine, is the easternmost point of the contiguous United States!

Since 1808, there has been a lighthouse here to guide ships through the Quoddy Narrows. The current one, with distinctive red-and-white stripes, was built in 1858, and is an active aid to navigation.

Photographs and paintings of this lighthouse are frequently reproduced.

The lighthouse is an active Coast Guard aid to navigation and contains a beautiful third order Fresnel lens. The 3rd order Fresnel lens is the only 3rd order and one of only eight Fresnel lenses still in use on the Maine Coast.

The light station’s historic buildings are owned and maintained by the Maine Department of Parks and Lands. The Museum inside the keeper’s house is operated by the West Quoddy Head Light Keepers Association.

West Quoddy will be open for tower tours provided by the U.S. Coast Guard. Fun and music all day long. Time for tours will be announce by the USCG closer to the day of event.

Check the West Quoddy Head Facebook page here to see what time the event will begin.
