Kate M.S. Hoffman, StudioWorks Artist-in-Residence Artist Talk

June 22, 2016 @ 7:00 pm - 8:15 pm UTC-5

Kate M.S. Hoffman of Los Angeles, Calif., is an artist-in-residence at StudioWorks and is working on a stop-motion film project, “Liquid Gold-Black Gold, The Golden Age of Whaling,” during her 4-week stay. The project is based on research into the migration paths of whales, the whaling industry and the Underground Railroad. Segments of the animation will be filmed in Eastport using historic buildings and seaport images as backdrops and other elements will be filmed in the studio using custom-made backgrounds and animation elements made from clay, paper and other sculpture media. A second project, “Dream Home: Eastport,” invites participants to imagine a home as an alternative reality, much like the experience of the artist creating set pieces for the animation. On Saturday, June 18, from 10 am to 4 pm, community members of all ages are invited to drop in to StudioWorks and participate in this performance by creating their own idealized homes out of cardboard, foam core and collage elements. Part of the experience is an invitation to work together in the studio, and participants from all backgrounds are encouraged to come, no previous art making experience is required. All materials will be provided and the event is free and open to the public. On Wednesday, June 22, at 7 p.m., Hoffman will give an artist talk about her animation work and studio practice at StudioWorks, 48 Water Street, Eastport.

The StudioWorks Artist-in-Residence Program is an initiative of the Tides Institute & Museum of Art. Funding for StudioWorks comes from generous support from ARTPLACE, private funders and individual donors.
