Harpsichord Hour at EAC

March 3 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm UTC-5

The Sunday Afternoons at the Arts Center series continues on March 3 at 3 pm, when Gregory Biss presents the annual Harpsichord Hour. The program will feature the Center’s  single manual harpsichord which was built in Cambridge, MA in the 1960s, modeled on an Italian instrument from the middle of the 18th century.  The program will include six short sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti; a piece by the 20th century American composer Robert Muczynski and selections from Erik Satie’s Sports & Divertissements, a work for piano here arranged for harpsichord. There will also be commentary on the history of the harpsichord and the music to be performed.

Biss was born in Illinois and educated in New England and Germany. His music has been performed by the Denver Symphony, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Vermeer Quartet. Retired from a 20-year career as a scuba diver in the aquaculture industry, Biss has resided in Eastport for more than 45 years where he and his wife, Barbara Smith, raised their four kids. His latest composition, a children’s opera called You Can’t Sit Here will be mounted at EAC in late March.

The Sunday Afternoons at the Arts Center series is a winter offering of informal and interactive programs every Sunday at 3 pm at Eastport Arts Center. As a reminder, the February 25 program will be a staged reading, ‘Five Short Comedies’, by the Lubec Campobello Community Theatre and Stage East. The events are offered by voluntary donation, with proceeds shared equally between the presenters and EAC ongoing program The Concert Series, which offers year-round programming run by volunteers. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. The full series schedule, which runs weekly through early April, skipping Easter Sunday, may be found at

Eastport Arts Center is at 36 Washington Street, Eastport, and at, and is handicapped-accessible. EAC abides by the State of Maine CDC COVID guidelines, revisiting our policy monthly. At this time, the use of masks in our building is optional.
