To celebrate this fall’s Great Maine Outdoor WEEK, Downeast Lakes Land Trust is hosting two boat trips on West Grand Lake! Join DLLT Education and Outreach Manager Colin Brown for a short trip along the “steamboat route,” and get a great look at the impact of landscape-scale conservation surrounding this beautiful lake. Climb aboard DLLT’s new pontoon boat, For Pete’s Sake – The ride will last a little over an hour, and passengers can bring food and drinks if they wish. The first trip leaves at 1 pm, and the second trip leaves at 2:30 pm. Space is limited to 8 passengers per trip, so reserve your spot today! Book Series: “Maine Mountain Guide”

On Friday, September 28th, Downeast Lakes Land Trust is pleased to welcome author Carey Kish, as he presents his latest, updated version of the Maine Mountain Guide. The presentation will begin at 6 pm in the Grand Lake Stream School Building. The Maine Mountain Guide, published by the Appalachian Mountain Club, is the only comprehensive hiking guide to the mountain trails of Maine, an essential companion for outdoor enthusiasts since 1961. This newest edition was two years in the making and has been painstakingly revised, updated and expanded by author/editor Carey Kish, who will lead us on a journey of discovery from Acadia National Park to Aroostook County, Maine’s White Mountains to Washington County.

Apple Harvest Day

It’s that time of year again – the leaves are ablaze, the nights are crisp, and the apple trees are full of fruit! On Monday, October 8th, DLLT is thrilled to host the annual Apple Harvest Day! Join DLLT staff and volunteers at the Montague’s Barn (next to the GLS Historical Society) as we celebrate New England’s classic fruit. Apple cider pressing, bobbing for apples, apple baked goods, apple slingshots, and more! At 2:30, apple historian and professor Todd Little-Siebold will lead a discussion on the history of apples in the Grand Lake Stream area, and lead an identification walk to area trees. The Grand Lake Stream Historical Society will also be holding their annual open house event during the same time. This event is free, and everyone is welcome!

Autumn Hike: Wabassus Mountain

With cooler weather, the crunch of leaves, and no bugs (yay!), autumn is the best time of year for hiking. On October 18th, join DLLT Education and Outreach Manager Colin Brown for a trip up to the highest peak in the Downeast Lakes Community Forest – a gradual, 500 foot climb on Wabassus Mountain. To view a trail map, click here! Take in partial views of the region’s many lakes, and catch a glimpse of the beautiful fall colors. Interested hikers will meet at the DLLT office in Grand Lake Stream at 2 pm to carpool out to the trail head. Wild Foods Potluck Dinner
