Plain Weave Course with Jason Collingwood

This is an ideal course for those wishing to try out rug weaving for the first time, though with enough ‘tricks’ to also suit the more experienced weaver. Students will learn how to make a strong serviceable rug (plain weave being an excellent structure for rugs). Initially students will weave stripes and spots using two colours, learning how to overcome the selvage problems inherent in each different design. Clasped wefts, crossed wefts and compensated inlay will be covered, all these new techniques giving the weaver more freedom with design.

Bright Fish and Flowers Sidewalk Chalk Party! with Fern Polsky-Hilyard

Concert Series presents Aaron Larget-Caplan, guitarist: ‘Landscapes, Meditations & Dances’

The Eastport Arts Center’s concert series continues at 7 pm on Friday, August 10 with guitarist Aaron Larget-Caplan, who’ll present a program titled ‘Landscapes, Meditations and Dances.’ From Spanish and Contemporary dances to fugues and lyrical meditations, guitar virtuoso Larget-Caplan presents an action-packed concert of music that pushes the boundaries of what can be done on the guitar. Featuring music from India, Japan, Russia, Europe and the United States, Larget-Caplan will perform music by Bach, Mussorgsky, Albéniz, Keigo Fujii, and premiere new works by Alan Hovhaness (Massachusetts), Vineet Shende (Maine), Koji Nakano (Japan), and Roger Eon (France). In addition, Larget-Caplan will be joined by local guitarist Tim Pence for a premiere by John Cage arranged by Aaron for two guitars. A reception sponsored by Dastardly Dick’s Wicked Good Coffee will follow the concert.

This annual race takes place on the western shore of West Grand Lake along DLLT’s Little Mayberry Cove Trail, and consists of a 5.1-mile loop on single-track hiking and dirt, motorized-vehicle paths.

14th Annual West Grand Lake Race

Downeast Lakes Land Trust is thrilled to host the 14th Annual West Grand Lake Race! This flatwater paddle race is a family-friendly event that has become a Grand Lake Stream favorite. All non-motorized watercraft are invited to participate in race distances of 4, 6, or 12 miles. Prior to the longer distances, we will host a special “kids race” for everyone to enjoy. Registration will be held from 9:15 – 10:15 am at the West Grand Lake boat launch, followed promptly by a pre-race meeting at 10:30 am. Registration fees are $25 for adults (13 and older) and $15 for children (12 and under). Pre-register before August 3rd, and save $5 per person! Registration includes a t-shirt and a post-race cookout lunch, held at Grand Lake Lodge. All proceeds benefit the Downeast Lakes Land Trust. Opening Reception and Art Talk-Women in Vision: Soul Journey

Eastport Arts Center’s Washington Street Gallery will present Soul Journey, an exhibition by Women in Vision, from August 2-30, with an opening reception on Sunday, August 12 from 5-7 pm. An art talk will be given at 6:15 pm. Participating artists are Sherry Ashby, Lisa Marqis Bradbury, Elizabeth Ostrander and Shanna Wheelock. Along with Sharon Kiley Mack, who was unfortunately unable to join in for this exhibition, the Women in Vision group came together to encourage themselves and other women to grow wings, express and share their female voices, vision, and creativeness while living their lives along the beautiful Bold Coast of Maine. Since 2013, the group has engaged with audiences through art talks and exhibitions in Eastport, Machias and Lubec. Their focus is on journeying through life intuitively; welcoming the soul’s inexorable pull towards becoming oneself.

The Zen DownEast Sangha meets Tuesday evenings at the Downeast Massage Therapy building at 848 U.S. Rte 1, Pembroke, Maine. Meetings always include Zen meditation and Zen liturgy You are invited to attend all or any portion of the activities—whatever works for your schedule and inclination. We sit 25-minute periods, and do a few minutes of walking meditation between periods. The sitting starts formally at 6:30 pm and ends at 7:30 pm, though you are free to leave at any time. We also offer drop-in classes on the writings of Zen Master Eihei Dogen from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm which you are warmly invited to join at any time. If you are new to Zen DownEast, please arrive fifteen minutes early for a brief orientation.

Grand Manan Museum: Henry Wiley & The Lichens of Grand Manan

Willey was the editor of a small newspaper in New Bedford, Massachusetts, who developed a keen interest in lichens. He visited Grand Manan in 1879 and made collections that are now dispersed among several herbaria in the USA. A number of these specimens were cited in the first published catalogue of North American lichens. They include some rare or otherwise interesting species that are suggestive of the contemporary nature of the forests on the island, and of changes that have occurred subsequently.
