Shades of Sepia~Photographs by Rob Derry

Reception for new work of photographer Rob Derry. Rob has reimagined both new in old work in the 100 year old tones of sepia. The warm, rich tones of brown and tan originally were use to extend the life of black and white photos. This method is tied to the sea because the ink from a squid called a cuttlefish was originally used preserve old photos. The exhibition will be on display until July 31.

Last Day of Harmony/Disharmony: Paintings by Peesh Rewak McClanahan and Lora Whelan Exhibition

Eastport artists Peesh Rewak McClanahan and Lora Whelan will have a two-person show at the Eastport Arts Center’s Washington Street Gallery for the month of June that explores the expansions and contractions found within harmony and disharmony. Through the use of single and mixed media, including acrylic and oil paints, pastels, graphite and collage, paintings will range from Whelan’s exploration of endangered species and the factors contributing to their decline to Rewak McClanahan’s exploration of how music, human and otherwise, unites harmoniously but also has discordant features that add to the whole experience for the musician and the listener. The show will run from Saturday, June 2, through Saturday, June 30, with a reception on Sunday, June 10, from 4-6 p.m. Music will be performed by Ted Rewak and refreshments will be available. The artists will speak briefly about their paintings starting at 4:15 p.m.

Missing Voices: Photography by Vivian Taylor Exhibition

Beginning July 1, The Washington Street Gallery at Eastport Arts Center will host “Missing Voices”, an exhibition of photographs by Eastport resident Vivian Taylor. Taylor’s photographic series dates from the 1990s, when she began work on a book about the life of Ruth Hamilton, a colleague and prominent African-American singer in Boston, Massachusetts. The exhibition will run through through July 30, with a reception on Saturday, July 14, from 4-6 p.m.  7/1-31 Washington Street Gallery is open Tuesday-Friday, 11 am-4 pm, (with the exception of July 4th), during EAC events, or by chance or by appointment; contact chris@eastportartscenter.org.

Enjoy viewing 200 quilts and quilted projects on display with a special exhibit of quilts by our youth, curated by member Patty Hagenaars. The Quilter’s Corner interactive room will have hourly demonstrations allowing visitors to ask questions and to learn about several piecing techniques. A number of activities for children is also planned. A new aspect to the show is “Meet the Quilter” where one of our members and her works are highlighted. Piece by Piece 2018’s Quilter will be Bonnie Brown Hunter of Pembroke Maine. At the close of the show, the winning ticket for raffle quilt "Scraps of the Past" will be drawn. Proceeds from this raffle support Ronald McDonald Charities in Maine and New Brunswick. Raffle Alley proceeds support our Hospice Lap Quilt Program. Admission by $5.00 US donation meets show expenses and supports future shows.
