2018 Opera Workshop for Advanced Singers Begins

Over the course of the past twenty-three years, this workshop has gained a national reputation as the place for singers to come for an intense, artistic growth experience. Our workshop seeks to bridge the gap between voice student and young professional. The faculty works as a team to guide each of the eighteen singers towards being a more polished and free artist. The workshop is process oriented and while there is no public performance, scene study and masterclasses provide vehicles for new concepts.

Summer Workshop Series: Quilts of the Underground Railroad

Eastport Arts Center’s Summer Workshop Series, with offerings on summer Tuesdays from 1-3 pm, will feature Underground Railroad Quilts with Lane Willey on July 24. Willey, an experienced quilter, became interested in the Underground Railroad about 13 years ago and followed the trail from Georgia to Maine. Her research turned into a book, the historical fiction novel Whittled by Time, and the making of the Underground Railroad quilt, a fascinating map that led many slaves to freedom. Participants in the workshop, which is for ages 8 and up, will create their own underground railroad quilted potholder, and learn about the importance and history of this unique form of communication.

Glow in the Dark Fabric Painting

Bring a scarf, t-shirt, jeans, tote bag or other item to decorate with permanent fabric markers and glow in the dark accents. Then we'll pile into a dark room in the library to watch them glow! All markers and paints are provided, as well as some fabric to use for spontaneous participants. All ages, but young children will require adult supervision with permanent fabric inks.

Mindful Movement and Meditation

Samantha Williams, (E-RYT, Board Certified Tai Chi Instructor) will lead two workshops to help you find the mindful practices that will suit you best. From 9:00 - 11:00 am, "Mindful Movement: Exploring Yoga, Tai Chi and Qi Gong" will offer an opportunity to explore three major styles of movement which link mind, body and spirit, and discuss the benefits of each. Attendees are welcome to participate and/or observe. And/or join Samantha from 1:00 – 3:00 pm for "Mindfulness and Meditation: Techniques and Tips to Quiet the Mind" Discover the four major styles of mediation, and find which works best for you. There will be time for a short practice and discussion of each technique. $30 per session, or $50 for the day, registration is required, as space is limited. Transcending the Photo Reference in Painting

Eastport Arts Center’s Summer Workshop Series, with offerings on summer Tuesdays from 1-3 pm, will continue on July 31 with Fern Hilyard’s Playful Painting for all ages. Participants are invited to come discover (or rediscover) the fun of painting without rules or judgement or worry about expensive materials. This will be a time to dip a paintbrush in any color and paint fearlessly without a plan. Hilyard is the lead teacher for Passages Program at Wayfinder Schools and enjoys creative work in a variety of media.

Blueberry camp! Throughout the month of August, arrange to camp at Smithereen Farm to harvest your own blueberries and make your own jam in our beautiful new timber-frame kitchen. DIY Blueberry Commons. Bring your own tent, jars and sugar, come explore the beautiful Cobscook Region on a low impact family holiday! You can enjoy the Greenhorns Agricultural Library and our little improvised tourist office at the 1901 Odd Fellows Hall, go hiking, biking, kayaking, and exploring.

Greenhorns and Jim Cornish Present: Blueberry Wine Workshop

Join us on August 5th from noon until 4:00 pm for our Blueberry Wine making workshop with Jim Cornish. Participants are required to bring 15 pounds of blueberries and a potato masher the day of the workshop in addition to 12 pounds of sugar five teaspoons of lemon juice and five teaspoons of yeast to add on the third day after the workshop. The wine yield will be approx. 5 1/2 gallons. After the workshop spend an evening with Jim listening to and singing along to live Folk and Americana music that we all know and love sprinkled with a few original songs.

Eastport Arts Center’s Summer Workshop Series, which features offerings on summer Tuesdays from 1-3 pm, will present an Introduction to Playing Ukulele for ages 8 and up on August 7. Participants will learn how to hold the ukulele, form basic chords, and learn some simple strumming patterns. By the end of the workshop, attendees will be able to play some tunes together. No experience playing an instrument or reading music is necessary to participate.

Plain Weave Course with Jason Collingwood

This is an ideal course for those wishing to try out rug weaving for the first time, though with enough ‘tricks’ to also suit the more experienced weaver. Students will learn how to make a strong serviceable rug (plain weave being an excellent structure for rugs). Initially students will weave stripes and spots using two colours, learning how to overcome the selvage problems inherent in each different design. Clasped wefts, crossed wefts and compensated inlay will be covered, all these new techniques giving the weaver more freedom with design.
