Greenhorns Presents: Sail Training Camp: Downeast Foxfire with Arista Holden

Greenhorns is pleased to present our first sail training program, a follow up on Maine Sail Freight project, which brought us to Maine! Starting at Liberty Hall in Machiasport and visiting islands, coves, and historic sites while immersing students in the wild coastal ecology of Downeast Maine, this ten day course offers a birch bark crafting workshop, traditional seamanship training and all sorts of naturalist adventure. Yes, you will learn to row and sail aboard the 18th-century Bantry Bay gigs.

Eastport Arts Center’s Summer Workshop Series will conclude with Pop-up Cards from 1-3 pm on Tuesday, August 21. Instructor Jo Smith will teach participants to create beautiful pop-up cards that they can easily recreate later at home. Attendees will get to use their imaginations to add extra decorations to their cards. Smith, a retired K-12 art teacher, has presented workshops at local, state and national art conferences. Her interests include writing stories and poetry, and she is passionate about traveling.

The Zen DownEast Sangha meets Tuesday evenings at the Downeast Massage Therapy building at 848 U.S. Rte 1, Pembroke, Maine. Meetings always include Zen meditation and Zen liturgy You are invited to attend all or any portion of the activities—whatever works for your schedule and inclination. We sit 25-minute periods, and do a few minutes of walking meditation between periods. The sitting starts formally at 6:30 pm and ends at 7:30 pm, though you are free to leave at any time. We also offer drop-in classes on the writings of Zen Master Eihei Dogen from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm which you are warmly invited to join at any time. If you are new to Zen DownEast, please arrive fifteen minutes early for a brief orientation.

Stage East will present Neil Simon’s I Ought to Be in Pictures August 20-22 and 27-29, at Eastport Arts Center. Uniquely, the production features a single family as the cast, three members of the Bradbury Family: Will Bradbury as Herb; daughter Audrey Bradbury as Libby; and spouse, Lisa Bradbury, as Steffy. Brian Schuth will direct and produce. The play, which opened on Broadway in 1981, was described by the New York Post as “terrific … sweet … and touching … a mature, memorable play …”. The play deals with some adult topics and is considered appropriate for ‘PG-13’ audiences.
