Willey was the editor of a small newspaper in New Bedford, Massachusetts, who developed a keen interest in lichens. He visited Grand Manan in 1879 and made collections that are now dispersed among several herbaria in the USA. They include some rare or otherwise interesting species that are suggestive of the contemporary nature of the forests on the island, and of changes that have occurred subsequently. Dr. Stephen Clayden, Research Curator, Botany & Mycology Section, New Brunswick Museum.
