Michael is reserving summer in Lubec, Maine, to offer en plein air workshops. Both oil and pastel are welcome, and every level of student, from beginner to advanced, will benefit from his classes. Occasionally, he will offer a special week for mentoring intermediate to advanced students. This is noted on the schedule. Four half-day session, small classes, and no minimum number of students.

Eastport Arts Center’s Summer Workshop Series, which features offerings on summer Tuesdays from 1-3 pm, will present an Introduction to Playing Ukulele for ages 8 and up on August 7. Participants will learn how to hold the ukulele, form basic chords, and learn some simple strumming patterns. By the end of the workshop, attendees will be able to play some tunes together. No experience playing an instrument or reading music is necessary to participate.

The Zen DownEast Sangha meets Tuesday evenings at the Downeast Massage Therapy building at 848 U.S. Rte 1, Pembroke, Maine. Meetings always include Zen meditation and Zen liturgy You are invited to attend all or any portion of the activities—whatever works for your schedule and inclination. We sit 25-minute periods, and do a few minutes of walking meditation between periods. The sitting starts formally at 6:30 pm and ends at 7:30 pm, though you are free to leave at any time. We also offer drop-in classes on the writings of Zen Master Eihei Dogen from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm which you are warmly invited to join at any time. If you are new to Zen DownEast, please arrive fifteen minutes early for a brief orientation.

Grand Manan Museum: Bedtime Stories – True Tales of New Brunswick’s Quilt Heritage

Quilts attest to traditions of comfort and rest as well as extravagant displays of skill and design. The more than 400 quilts cared for by the New Brunswick Museum provide insights into daily life of the province between 1770 and 2016. Examining some of them more closely uncovers fascinating details of their production and importance. In addition to the many historic quilts you will learn about during this talk, you will also see and learn about the NB Museum’s 2017 acquisition of our island’s Tidal Threads Quilt and Needlework Guild award-winning quilt “Setting Days”. Admission by Donation.
