The Art of Storytelling Through Very Fine Folk Art

Take a course this Spring and learn about the magic, fun and stories associated with folk art and how to express them in a work of art. Learn to tell a story in a painting – then tell the story. Beginners to experts – this is a different way of thinking and musing. Course paintings will be acrylic on canvas. Great drawing skills are not necessary but a sense of humour is. This is not your typical folk art. Registration Deadline: March 3, 2018

Kids Spring Fishing Hike

Get the kids out of the house during April break – On Tuesday, April 17th, join DLLT Education and Outreach Manager Colin Brown for a “Fishing Hike” along the Pocumcus Lake Trail in the Downeast Lakes Community Forest. We will meet at 10 am at the Grand Lake Stream School Building, and carpool out to the trailhead. The trail winds along the lake shore, offering several places to cast a line. Kids should come properly dressed for the weather, and bring a fishing pole, water, and a lunch. DLLT will provide bait, lures, and extra fishing gear. The hike will be over 3 miles, so sturdy footwear is a must.

April Vacation Arts Camp: Escape to Polynesia April 17-19

EAC will offer their popular April Vacation Arts Camp April 17-19, 10 am-noon. Inspired by the culture and landscape of Polynesia, the camp will feature themed activities such as ti leaf leis, tribal tattoo art posters, shadow puppet folk tales, ukulele fun and more. Instructors include music educator Alison Brennan and Tarah Waters, who has recently returned from Hawaiian travels. The two will be joined by visiting artists Chris Grannis (puppetry) and Lauren Koss (music).

Kids’ Movie & Food Club featuring Moana

EAC’s monthly Kid’s Movie and Food Club continues with a meeting featuring the 2016 animated film Moana on Tuesday, April 17 from 12:30-2:30 pm. Planned in conjunction with EAC’s April Vacation Arts Camp, ‘Escape to Polynesia,’ the PG-rated film is a colorful ocean adventure with a spunky Polynesian heroine at the helm. EAC Island Institute Fellow Tarah Waters will host the event, which will also feature loco moco, a traditional Hawaiian dish of rice, ground beef and eggs, which Tarah learned to make while living in Hawaii last year. Eastport Arts Center’s International Dance group will hail the new year with the addition of a second weekly meeting, and starting January 2 will meet both Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30-6 pm at the center. The group is open to everyone, including beginners, and features traditional dance from Bulgaria, Romania, Greece and Israel.
