Sunday Afternoons at the EAC: ‘All That Remains’, Haiku poetry by Catherine J.S. Lee

March 24 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Free

The Sunday Afternoons at the EAC series, a winter offering of informal and interactive programs every Sunday at 3 pm at Eastport Arts Center, continues March 24 with poet Catherine J.S. Lee. Lee will read from her award-winning haiku collection, All That Remains, which was re-published in August 2018 under her own imprint, Sea Smoke Press. In this evocative collection of haiku about grappling with loss and change, she reflects on memories of loved ones and the Maine landscapes of her childhood, including Aroostook and Somerset Counties as well as the Eastport area. According to the judges of the Turtle Light Press Haiku Chapbook Competition, “Her poems carry an emotional weight, a significance beyond the surface of things; they are not just pretty images.”

Lee began writing haiku in 2007 after years as a writer of short fiction. She lives, writes, teaches, and gardens in Eastport and in her spare time enjoys Zentangling and playing five-string banjo and the ukulele. She was named as an “emerging voice in English-language haiku” in A New Resonance 7 from Red Moon Press. Her haiku have been published widely and won numerous awards, and she has led haiku workshops in local schools, at Sunrise Senior College of the University of Maine at Machias, and at the Haiku Circle in Northfield, Massachusetts. Lee also works in haiga (a form combining an image, either painted or photographed, and haiku) and haibun (a form combining prose and haiku). A member of the Haiku Society of America and the Bangor Haiku Group, she edited and designed A Splash of Water, the 2015 Haiku Society of America members’ anthology. All That Remains is her first solo haiku collection and was originally published in a hand-made edition of 100 copies by Turtle Light Press of Arlington, Virginia, after winning their Haiku Chapbook Competition.

Sunday Afternoons at the EAC programs are held downstairs at the EAC. Hot drinks and refreshments are offered; donations are gratefully accepted.
