Grand Manan Museum: Henry Wiley & The Lichens of Grand Manan
August 14 @ 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm
|Henry Willey (1824–1907) and the Lichens of Grand Manan, with Stephen Clayden. Willey was the editor of a small newspaper in New Bedford, Massachusetts, who developed a keen interest in lichens. He visited Grand Manan in 1879 and made collections that are now dispersed among several herbaria in the USA. A number of these specimens were cited in the first published catalogue of North American lichens. They include some rare or otherwise interesting species that are suggestive of the contemporary nature of the forests on the island, and of changes that have occurred subsequently.
